Airtel Money matters as a second wallet, not as an M-PESA clone
Airtel Money has a smaller mobile-money subscription share than M-PESA in Kenya, but it is no longer negligible. The Communications Authority reported Airtel Money at 11.1% of active mobile-money subscriptions in the quarter ending June 2026, while Safaricom's M-PESA held 88.8%.
For a merchant, that creates a practical question: do enough customers prefer Airtel Money, or does it add enough recovery value, to justify supporting a second wallet?
Airtel provides merchant collection APIs
Airtel Africa's Developer Portal is available for Kenya and other Airtel markets. Airtel states that its Open APIs allow merchants to collect payments from Airtel Money customers and disburse into Airtel Money wallets.
Applications are managed by operating company/country, so Kenya support should be treated as a country-specific merchant capability rather than a generic pan-African switch.
What a recurring merchant should verify before integration
- Whether the merchant is approved for Airtel Money collections in Kenya.
- Which collection API/product is enabled.
- How customer authorization is presented.
- How transaction status is queried when the initial result is unresolved.
- How callbacks are authenticated or validated.
- Settlement timing, currency and account requirements.
- Refund/reversal procedures.
Do not assume the public availability of an API equals production access for a particular merchant.
Where Airtel Money can add business value
Customer choice
A customer with an Airtel Money balance should not have to move money to another wallet just to pay a recurring invoice if the merchant already supports Airtel.
Recovery after a final M-PESA failure
A second enabled wallet can provide another path to settle the same invoice once the first attempt is safely final.
Reduced single-rail dependency
Supporting a second wallet can reduce dependence on one payment route, though it also adds operational and reconciliation complexity.
Keep Airtel Money inside the same billing model
The invoice should not become an Airtel-specific object. The customer may pay with Airtel Money this month and M-PESA next month.
Store the method and provider on the payment attempt, not on the commercial obligation.
Airtel Money is not automatically worth adding for every merchant
A second wallet introduces integration, support and finance work. Use customer data to decide whether the benefit justifies it.
Useful evidence includes customer requests, failed-payment recovery opportunities, wallet-share in the merchant's own audience and the staff cost of maintaining another route.
