A second wallet is valuable only if it solves a real customer or recovery problem.
Start with customer evidence
The Communications Authority's Q4 FY2025/26 sector statistics put Airtel Money at 11.1% of mobile-money subscriptions in June 2026, while M-PESA held 88.8%.
That does not mean 11.1% of your own customers prefer Airtel Money. Use the market figure as context, then measure your customer base.
Ask three business questions
- Are customers asking for Airtel Money or failing because M-PESA is their only option?
- Can Airtel Money recover a meaningful share of failed/expired M-PESA attempts?
- Will the extra provider configuration and reconciliation work be justified by usage?
Keep the same invoice model
Do not create an Airtel-specific billing ledger. M-PESA and Airtel Money attempts should both point to the same invoice or obligation.
Validate the production route
Confirm whether the merchant integrates directly with Airtel Money or through a PSP, which entity is approved, which collection product is enabled and how settlement and reversals work.
Plan recovery rules before launch
Do not offer Airtel Money while an M-PESA attempt is unresolved. Verify the previous attempt first, then offer another enabled method when the invoice is still due.
Add Airtel Money as a measured experiment, not a logo
Before launch, decide what would make the second wallet successful. Useful targets can include the share of customers who select Airtel Money, the recovery rate after a final M-PESA failure, support tickets caused by wallet availability and the incremental reconciliation workload.
If usage stays negligible, the business can decide whether the operational cost is justified. If usage is meaningful, the data helps justify keeping the route and improving its placement in checkout.
Prepare operations before exposing the option
- Give support a way to identify an Airtel Money attempt and provider reference.
- Add Airtel Money to the reconciliation export rather than creating a separate customer ledger.
- Test the exact failure and unresolved-state behavior available through the chosen provider route.
- Verify that paid invoices suppress reminders regardless of which wallet settled them.
The customer should experience another choice. The merchant should experience the same billing model with one additional payment route.
Decide where Airtel Money appears
The merchant can expose it as an equal checkout choice, a recovery option after a final M-PESA failure, or both. Test placement deliberately; a second wallet should solve a customer need rather than simply add another logo.
